REVIEW PAINTING CLASS : Roman LAPPAT 2015 !
We really spent a wonderful week end with roman this month… this was the second time he came in our club Fig78.
From Friday evening to Sunday, so much fun, so many colors, ideas, fails and success !!!
Our place can handle up to 16 people, and some of the students have been already trained by Roman last time… already few years ago 😉
Those ones can paint anything they want, the model they choose no matter the scale or origin… I was one of those…
The other, who are still “Jar’s painting class” virgins 😉 should paint the daemonette from GW… classical mini, but easy to handle to explain various techniques..
Friday evening…. Some slides in the dark !!!
Yes we started with some presentation on powerpoint… I should admit that the new format is better, more focused, with a bit less examples that can sometimes give the feeling to be a bit lost by too many concepts… at least if you are new to miniature painting.
Mainly real life examples, not only about mini.. rules with colors are not only made for miniature painting… therefore, canvas, pictures, photo… nice and interactive session like the first time.
Time to touch the mini? Yep… preparing.. not a big deal… even if sometimes finding the correct leg puts you in trouble 😉
And basing time… I like to way Roman did it.. without planning too much, just letting his inspiration takes the leadership.. sometimes you can be surprised how the sketch you have in mind can change while placing wood, dust, sand, stones… As usual Roman came with tons of basing stuff, where we can pick what we need… I love those plastic boxes, full of bits !!! thanks by the way to Pk pro because this time again, we got a big box of basing stuff… Thanks Felix, you’re awesome..
Then everyone made a different base, and this is always striking how people brains and ideas are different…. Love this… looking to those bases !!!
Going to bed.. yes, already midnight !
Saturday morning… I am not tired.. no… not yet… but can’t wait to start !
Painting the base… why starting by that… I wondered also this initially, but after being with roman already for a previous painting class, I really like this point..
Regarding the technique, it’s like doing a rough sketch… mixing color on the base.. for those who know check the video about this huge D&D base…
Therefore, you can just relax, and try new things, new way of giving contrast to you base.. this is really funny, and you can just feel the brush and see what happens with your color range…
Bringing then more and more contrast, colors .. sometimes quite extreme compare to your global ambiance… but everything works.. you cannot make mistake… this is maybe what people have to remember about Roman’s painting class…
Then priming the mini, we will come back later on adding details to the base..
The light situation, working with glazes on skin… was different the first time with more wet on wet used… but I could understand that this is a bit more difficult to handle for the students…
Bringing contrast, more and more… to finish by the head, where the focus should be…
Lonnngggg day… now I am tired.. going to sleep a bit around midnight..
Sunday : when details come…
Difficult to open my eyes… ouch… now painting eyes?? Ok
Not with the brush… toothpick… definitively more useful than we thought!
Learning how to clean mistakes, smoothing stuff…
The afternoon is really nice, by touching various topics.. leather, metals…. And details on base, rust, snow, water…
I should admit this is relaxing …
We had a very nice moment all together… The deamonettes are so different from one to another !! Really awesome to see this..
As usual, I got a special gift for only one student.. THE ONE !! and this year, Roman asks us to capture with the camera how each of us could be the best Ape !!
Special word for Laurent… who was our “ninja”… placing furtively a stickers on all of us.. and what sticker !! No one really discovered this until the end.. and that is why he won the prize !!! DVD freehand and banners from Painting Buddha ! congrats 😉
Oh Man ! what a week end… I really liked this painting class, but also the behavior of Roman.. always nice to discuss with him.. Sorry Roman that this time, accommodation was so complicated…
Each of us, on a different level, with different “take home message”, experiences a very nice moment…
Miniatures from students :
Special thanks to the neighborhood.. for sharing with us the darkest part of their “personality” … each time Roman explained an important part… (private joke inside)
Special thanks 2 : For the various toasters, pancake heaters that student brought to feed us !
Special thanks 3 : For our UK guy David who came from far away to attend his second painting class with us !! nice to see you again… And Anthony, who is now in a more sunny place… but who took train to come with us 😉
Random pics 😉
